Amazon passes on St. Louis for headquarters

Editor's note: I apologize for a three-week absence in this weekend column. But I want to sincerely thank all of those who sent their condolences on the death of my father. Although not necessarily surprising, it is somewhat disappointing that a new $5-billion Amazon headquarters will not be constructed in St. Louis. Amazon announced this week its list of 20 finalist cities and St. Louis failed to make the cut, despite the long-shot promise of an innovative hyper-loop that would connect St. Louis and Kansas City in a futuristic 25-minute trip across the state. Honestly, St. Louis never had a chance. If you examine the 20 finalist cities, they are concentrated along the eastern corridor of the country in a who's-who list of urban sprawl. Sure, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Miami made the cut. As did Nashville and Austin.
