Taking the DARE: Program returns to Portageville classroom

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. —When Portageville voters approved a one-fourth of 1 percent sales tax to provide police officers for their schools last August, it brought more than additional security. It brought the return of the DARE program. Sgt. Chris Cooley, Portageville school resource officer, provided 10 weeks of classes for more than 100 fifth and sixth graders. I am so tired of going shopping, grocery store or any other store, Walmart, I don’t care where and planning to turn up an aisle and shop there and having someone walking along, coughing the whole way, down the whole aisle. Whether they’re in an automatic cart or what. But if you don’t have the consideration for your other community members, you can get a box of masks at the Dollar Tree for a dollar. At least if you’re coughing carry a handkerchief or a napkin or something to block your cough. The germs from your cough can carry 50 feet. One cough. So if you don’t have the decency to consider your fellow community members, stay the home.

Joyce Bell named new director of Aspire Women’s Center

Joyce Bell, of Sikeston, has been named the new director of the Aspire Women’s Center in Sikeston. Bell assumed her duties on January 1. “In my role as director,” Bell explained, “I am committed to making sure women in Southeast Missouri are aware of, and have access to, our services. We are the only clinic of this type in our area—offering free pregnancy services to those who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant.”...
