Speakout
(Opinion ~ 03/16/22)
Residents of Sikeston — take heed. We are privileged to have a director in charge of Sikeston DPS who we all can be proud of. He is a man of integrity, a Christian, who conducts himself in a way that if you spend any time around him, you will discover that he not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He is a good communicator and true professional in dealings with the public. He is a refreshing breath of fresh air and his approach to community policing is something that has been needed here for years. I am sure that when he became director of Public Safety, many of his ideas on community policing were not immediately accepted by some in our community, nor by some of the officers who have moved on to other communities where they could continue their “hard nosed” tactics. I am sure that accounts for most, if not all, of the staffing shortages in DPS today. As I write this, there is a community meeting of leaders, pastors and others scheduled by the chief. Hopefully we can hear what he has to say, and together, strategize ways that we can come together to tackle these problems we are now facing. The chief has the right approach — together, respectfully, we can all benefit.
