SIKESTON - The interior of Johnson's Cafe, a two-room structure in Sunset Addition, was gutted by fire Saturday afternoon.

SIKESTON - Seventy members of the Sikeston Kiwanis Club, their wives and guests, gathered at the Rustic Rock Inn Tuesday night for the annual installation dinner meeting of the club. New officers installed were: Robert Meyer, president; Harold Hill, first vice president; Earl Hutchinson, second vice president; Lee Shell, secretary; and Harry Dover, treasurer.

SIKESTON - The new youth volunteer program at Missouri Delta Community Hospital is now under way. A required orientation for the 25 participants was conducted Saturday afternoon. The program is for girls and boys of high school age and is under the direction of Joanne Moore, director of nursing. A uniform of white oxford shirts and red and black plaid vests with black pants or skirts is required for all volunteers.

NEW MADRID - A re-issuance of the city-owned power plant bonds could realize a savings of nearly $2 million. However, who will benefit from the savings - the local citizens or the company which operates the plant - has yet to be determined.


SIKESTON - Heavy rainfall Monday created problems for local motorists and almost claimed the lives of four people when their car overturned in a water-filled ditch. Rescue and police personnel rushed to the scene of an accident on County Road 450, four miles north of Sikeston. The accident occurred when the driver lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to cross a wooden bridge.
