Your View 7/22: Childhood Cancer Month

Monday, July 22, 2002

September is Childhood Cancer Month.

Yes, children get cancer, too. In fact, despite remarkable research progress, cancer still kills more children than any other disease. More and better cures must be found.

My daughter, Holly, was diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of 2000. Holly was only 12 years of age when her childhood cancer journey started. She had a bone marrow transplant in April 2001. Holly has been in remission for 15 months now.

Our family lives with the fear that the cancer can come back any day. Holly was featured on the front page of the Standard Democrat in November 2000.

There will be supporters gathering in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 25-27. They will be helping to raise awareness and advocate for childhood cancer. I would like to see our local newspaper do an article on awareness for childhood cancer. We need to make the people of Sikeston aware of infants, children and teen-agers get cancer, too.
