Class 2 and 3 tip off hoop playoffs

CLASS 3, DISTRICT 2

GREENVILLE -- No. 2 Charleston coasted to a 94-48 win over No. 7 Woodland in the first round of the Class 3, District 2 Tournament at Greenville on Saturday.

Charleston (17-9) took a commanding 55-17 lead into the halftime intermission, then pushed the advantage to 86-28 entering the final quarter. Six Bluejays reached double digits in the scoring column, led by Justin Clark and Shawn Sherrell with 18 and 17, respectively. Jamarcus Williams scored 14, Ashton Farmer had 12, Tavis Hamilton and Chris Cassell added 10 apiece.

Charleston, topped by Clark's four, sank 11 3-pointers.

Woodland, with only three players scoring, was led by Seth Gaines with a game-high 26.

Charleston meets the winner of today's game between No. 3 Scott City and No. 6 Clearwater in a semifinal matchup on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

The Kelly boys basketball team opened the Class 3, District 2 tournament Saturday with a 66-27 win over host Greenville, the last seed.

Kendal Deason led top-seeded Kelly (20-5) with 23 points and Kent Deason added 15.

Kelly will face the East Prairie/Puxico winner on Thursday in the semifinals

GREENVILLE -- Kelly Essner scored 21 points and April Rocket added 20 to lead Kelly (22-4) to a win in the Class 3, District 2 Tournament. The top-seeded Hawks will play the winner of the Charleston/Woodland game, scheduled for Tuesday, in the semifinal round on Friday.

BLOOMFIELD -- Advance was the only local team to move on at the Class 2, District 2 Tournament at Bloomfield. The No. 3 Hornets defeated Richland 78-48. Meadow Heights, the fifth seed, fell to Ellington 72-62 in another quarterfinal game. Chaffee, the No. 9 seed, fell to East Carter 63-49 in a play-in game. Advance will face No. 2 South Iron at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals.
