Sharks place second at Bluff
POPLAR BLUFF -- The Sikeston Sharks swim team took second at the Poplar Bluff Swim Meet held Saturday.
Kennett won the event with 845 points followed by Sikeston's 367. Charleston finished fourth (108) while Dexter (44) placed fifth.
"I was impressed," said coach Megan Nelson. "Our younger swimmers really stepped up. I put some of them in (longer races) and all of them did really well.
"Our older swimmers really stepped up also."
Nelson said many Sikeston swimmers had personal bests on the day.
"We had one girl improve 5 1/2 seconds in the 25 yard freestyle," Nelson said. "To knock off two seconds is impressive to a coach."
Sikeston's day was highlighted by Morgan Fraser. Swimming in the 11-12 age division, Morgan placed first in all five of her events, winning the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 fly and 200 individual medley.
"She did an awesome job," Nelson said.
Natalie Stevens won the 25 freestyle and 50 freestyle in the eight and under girls division while Grace Hamra took first in the six-and-under 25 freestyle event. Mary Anne Kendig won the 50 breaststroke in the girls 9-10 age division and Lauren Medley took home top honors in the 100 fly in the 15-18 division.
The girls division also saw three winners in the relay events with the 100 medley in the 9-10 division made up of Annie Pewitt, Amanda Allen, Mary Anne Kendig and Emily Bloemer. The 200 freestyle relay team in the 11-12 age division made up of Ashley Sansagraw, Taylor Renfroe, Chelsea Cross and Crista South took first as did the 15-18 200 freestyle team of Medley, Taylor Allen, Jessica Pierce and Aidan Marshall.
On the boys side, Gratten Allen took first in the 11-12 50 breaststroke while Colson Frakes won the six-and-under 25 backstroke. Jake Pewitt also won top honors in the 11-12 200 individual medley.
Sikeston will be in action again Saturday when they host their first home meet of the season.
