SIKESTON - The Sikeston ninth grade football team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 34-0 loss to New Madrid County Central's junior varsity team on Monday night at SPS Stadium.

NMCC jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 22-0 by halftime.

"I thought our kids played well at times, especially playing Thursday and turning around and playing on Monday," said Sikeston coach Steve Bays. "Our kids are still a little sore from that game. We didn't see them all weekend and then we have a game before we can make corrections.

"It's tough to do, but I commend our kids for playing hard."

Bays said matching his freshmen against the NMCC JV was tough on his team

"When you play against older kids like that, there's a big difference between freshmen and sophomores," said Bays. "I mean a big difference. I don't want to sound like sour grapes but that's the way I feel. But it was a team loss and we're still working to get better each week."

Sikeston's freshman team will be off until Sept. 30 when they travel to Jackson.

The eighth grade football team will host Charleston on Thursday at 6 p.m.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Cape Central junior varsity built a 12-0 lead at halftime and never trailed against the Bulldog junior varsity.

Adrian Douglas provided the Bulldogs' only touchdown on a 5-yard run in the third quarter.
