Looking Back in Time at Oct. 7

SIKESTON - Construction of an auxiliary airport here, in conjunction with the Army's air training base being built at Malden, will start soon and be completed by Jan. 11. The auxiliary field will be a mile wide and two miles long.

BENTON - Mr. and Mrs. Bernard C. Rice of Sikeston quietly celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Sept. 29 at their home. Mr. and Mrs. Rice were married Sept. 29, 1906, in the Sandywoods Community near Blodgett by the Rev. Alvin Smith, a Baptist minister. They have one son, Bernard Rice of Sikeston, and one grandson.

SIKESTON - The Fire Division of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety will sponsor a parade of fire trucks as part of its observance of Fire Prevention Week.

SIKESTON - First, they were frightened, Now, they're angry. Tension over the Quality Plating site cleanup was apparent at a Saturday meeting of about 16 people who live around the site. They gathered at the Sandywood Baptist Church to talk to Troy Gordon, Toxics Committee chairman of the Sierra Club and a resident of Rolla.


SIKESTON - Sikeston Department of Public Safety officials rushed to a business fire at 7:37 p.m. Sunday. According to a DPS spokesperson, the fire at Canedy Sign Company, 700 S. Kingshighway, started on the east side of the building. The office area was saved. The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
