Virgie Shackles

CHAFFEE -- Veronica Cecelia "Virgie" Shackles, 94, died at 1:20 a.m. July 22, 2005, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

Born April 17, 1911, in Charleston, daughter of the late George Washington and Catherine Mary Scheffer Griffin, she was a nurse aide at the old St. Francis Hospital and a cook at Chaffee General Hospital and retired as a cook from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. In 1995 she moved to Cape Girardeau from Chaffee, where she was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and Daughters of St. Ambrose.

On Jan. 19, 1932, she married John A. Shackles who preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1994.

One son, one brother and three sisters also preceded her in death.

Survivors include: two sons, Eddie Shackles of Whitewater and Kenneth Shackles of Cape Girardeau; and 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee with the Rev. Ralph Duffner officiating.

Burial will follow in the Union Park Cemetery at Chaffee.

Pallbearers will be: Scott Shackles, Mike Griffin, Gary Shackles, Joe Gibbs, Bill Hahn and Raymond Spies.
