60 years ago

BENTON - Dentists in the area announced a slight increase in fees. The doctors said the increase is due to increased cost of materials and supplies. It goes into effect May 15.


SIKESTON - The mercury in the Missouri Delta Community Hospital fund thermometer was sent boiling over the top. Contributors topped the $85,000 mark. The goal was $75,000.

MALDEN - The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Jackson was quietly observed in their home. The celebration was scaled down due to Mrs. Jackson's continued suffering from a back injury.

20 years ago

WASHINGTON - Former Sikeston resident Lee Strayhorn took part in a Washington Workshop Congressional Seminar. Strayhorn was one of 104 high school students attending daily meetings at Capitol Hill and the Pentagon.


MATTHEWS - Reggie Vandever, president of the Big Prairie Jaycees, received the honor of being one of the two chapter presidents to be designated an "Outstanding Local Chapter President." The award was given by the state Region 8 Jaycees.

EAST PRAIRIE - Shane McCutchen went 5-for-5 with 2 RBIs as East Prairie belted out 19 hits in a 25-2 win over Malden. Jamie Moore was the winning pitcher, striking out six and walking one in four innings. Michael Allred pitched one inning and gave up one hit.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston Art League's Eighth Annual Judged Art Show featured 107 paintings from 13 area cities. Aaron Horrell of Chaffee took "Best of Show" with his mixed-media painting, "A Farmer's Work is Never Done."


SIKESTON - Two happily surprised volunteers left the 1992 Southwestern Bell Volunteer Awards breakfast. Vee Holman was awarded Volunteer of the Year - senior adult category and Richard Dale won the individual volunteer award and received the award for the Scott County Chapter of the American Red Cross in the organization category.
