Kelly wins tourney, Sikeston grapplers bound for nationals
ORAN -- Kelly placed first in the three-team Oran Round-Robin Tournament after posting its second win of the week against the host Eagles on Saturday. Kelly, which posted a 4-0 win over Oran last Tuesday, outslugged the Eagles 13-9 and Dexter 10-8 in the one-day tournament.
In the Hawks' win over Oran, Kendal Deason went 5-for-5 with two doubles and Kent Deason 4-for-4 with a home run. Winning pitcher Caleb Daughhetee helped his cause with three hits.
Caleb Seyer had a 3-for-4 day with two doubles for the Eagles and Austin Dumey went 2-for-4 with a home run. Trevor Irwin also homered for Oran.
Alex Chasteen (0-1) took the loss.
Oran (13-6) edged Dexter 8-7 in nine innings.
Chase Seyer (4-3) picked up the win and went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run. Irwin also was 3-for-5 and Kody Campbell had two hits in five trips. Caleb Seyer homered for the Eagles.
SEDALIA -- Three members of the Sikeston Big Dogs wrestling team qualified for nationals with wins at the Missouri USA State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships in Sedalia this past weekend.
Joe Johnson, participating in the junior division (high school upperclassmen), won the Greco-Roman heavyweight championship. He will represent Missouri at the Junior National Dual Tournament in Enid, Okla., on July 1-2. Johnson failed to qualify in the freestyle with a fourth-place finish.
Heavyweight Robert Madison captured double titles with first-place finishes in both categories in the cadet division (high school underclassmen) to qualify for the Cadet National Dual Tournament which will be held in Kansas City, Mo., on June 29.
Josh Northern, also a heavyweight, placed second in freestyle and third in Greco. With his second-place finish in freestyle, Northern earned a berth on Missouri's second-team cadet division.
Gavilan Bland, at 145 pounds, placed second in freestyle and fourth in Greco. Neither finish earned Bland a qualifying spot, but he is likely to be chosen as an alternate on the cadet team, according to Big Dogs' team leader Ivan Robison.
A fifth member of the Big Dogs, Craig Burton, did not place.
The Big Dogs, coached by Seth Robison and Louis Goehri, have now qualified five wrestlers, Johnson, Chris Northern, Madison, Josh Northern and Bland, for the Freestyle-Greco USA National Tournament held in Fargo, N.D., July 29-
