Your view: Handicapped by hotel

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

I recently learned a hard lesson in Sikeston.

A national chain inn only has one handicapped equipped room and the parking in front of it is used by employees of the facility or anyone that gets there first. They also book the same handicap room to two different people and the ones that got it were not handicapped because I saw both parties running to their car. This left my husband, who only has one leg, without a place to bathe comfortably in our room plus he had to park several spaces away. The management said they didn't even have a bath stool to put in our room to facilitate his bathing. I can't believe in the USA there could be such indifference toward people with disabilities. I had a higher opinion of the people in Sikeston until now.

Some states have laws concerning equal rights for handicapped. Is this not enforced or is Missouri exempt?

I certainly hope by our next trip home someone down there learned a lesson and makes some changes in their facility otherwise we will be forced to go elsewhere.
