No serious injuries reported; match against Bell City canceled

BELL CITY - The Sikeston volleyball team was involved in an accident while riding the bus to play a match against Bell City on Monday evening.

The accident occurred on Highway 91 just east of Bell City. According to reports, the bus collided with a narrow bridge with traffic approaching from the opposite lane.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Although several of the players were shaken, no serious injuries were reported.

"We've had some players checked into the hospital for a few minor injuries but there isn't anything serious at this point," said Sikeston volleyball head coach Steve Beydler. "A lot of the girls were pretty frightened. Their parents came and picked them up because they didn't want to ride the bus back. It was a frightening situation but we're extremely blessed. It could've been a lot worse. We're very fortunate that it turned out the way it did."

Beydler added that the school will have counselors available today to discuss the incident.

The match with Bell City was canceled. Whether it will be made up has yet to be determined. Sikeston's final match of the regular season will be on Thursday at NMCC at 6 p.m.
