NEW MADRID - Although first day figures were down, enrollment for the New Madrid County R-1 School District will be an estimated 2,100 students for the coming year. According to Dr. Mike Barnes, superintendent, the first day of classes went well throughout the district, however attendance figures were down on Aug. 18. "The hot weather and the district's recently initiated requirement that all records - academic, immunization and discipline - of new students be current and accurate prior to enrollment are among probable reasons for enrollment being considerably off," he said.
