NEW MADRID -- New Madrid County Central boys basketball coach David Fields has resigned for unspecified reasons.

The first year coach steps down after his team went 9-16 this year. While he gave no reason for his resignation on Tuesday night, he did have positive things to say about his players.

"The kids (at NMCC) are tremendous," said Fields. "I think they're going to have a bright future. It was one heck of a year, but like I told the guys at the end of the year, I wouldn't want to go through a season like that with anybody other than them."

Fields was promoted from assistant coach to head coach this year, taking over for Joby Holland.

NMCC had lost its top seven players to graduation from the year before.
