SIKESTON - Sikeston residents will see some improvements to one of the town's main thoroughfares.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a contract for work in Sikeston as part of the Smooth Roads Initiative. A $667,770 contract was awarded to Apex Paving Co. for improvement of Route 62 (Malone Avenue) in Sikeston.

The project includes resurfacing two and a half miles of pavement and shoulders from the Route 61/114 (Main Street) intersection to the I-55 interchange at Sikeston.

Darius Dowdy, resident engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation, said MoDOT hasn't met with the contractor yet and isn't sure when the project will begin or how long it's expected to take.

"There are too many unknowns to say anything right now," Dowdy said. "The length of the job depends on the contractor's plans and how he approaches it."

However, Dowdy does know the contractor is booked solid until the middle of November.

"They have a lot of work scattered throughout the Bootheel area and a lot of it depends on if they get things done and if the weather cooperates," Dowdy said.

MoDOT will alert motorists about changes to traffic once details are finalized with the contractor.

The work is part of MoDOT's Smooth Roads Initiative made possible by the passage of Amendment 3 last November. The Smooth Roads Initiative plans to have 2,200 miles of roadways across Missouri that 80 percent of the population uses smoother and safer by the end of 2007.
