Lady Hawks dominate Lady Pirates

BENTON - The Kelly Lady Hawks defeated the Perryville Lady Pirates Wednesday afternoon, in six innings, due to the 10-run mercy rule, 11-1.

For the Lady Hawks, it was their second victory against Perryville in one week, as they defeated them over the weekend in the Jackson Invitational as well.

"It was a win," Kelly head coach Rhonda Ratledge said. "We've had a few mental mistakes lately, like yesterday in our loss to Poplar Bluff.

"We started out the game today with an error in the first inning, We've got to get that corrected in the next week because we've got four games left until districts."

The error did eventually plate a run for Perryville, but Kelly answered back with two in the bottom half of the first, and didn't look back for the next five innings.

The Lady Hawks had another big game from leadoff hitter Londyn Backfisch, recording her second home run in as many days, going 3-for-4 on the day, with two singles, a home run, four stolen bases and three runs scored.

Brittany Brantley also had a solid game both offensively and defensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate, with two singles, a double, two RBI and a run scored. Behind the plate, she picked off Perryville's Jill Bohnert at third base to end the threat in the first inning.

Throwing to Brantley was starter Heather Beggs, who picked up the win, throwing the first four innings, giving up one run, on four hits and had three strikeouts.

Jessica Riley threw two innings in relief, allowing no runs, on two hits and had one strikeout.

Perryville's Emma Littge took the loss, throwing five innings, giving up nine runs, on nine hits and allowed three walks.

Emily Hanquist threw one inning of relief, giving up two runs, on two hits, which included the game-winner off of the bat of Brantley to enforce the mercy rule.

Alyssa Bauwens scored the lone run for Perryville, going 2-for-3 at the plate, with a single and a double.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action on Monday, as they host the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs at 4 p.m.
