Advance man arrested for stabbing his mother

BLOOMFIELD -- An Advance man, who police say has a history of mental problems, has been arrested in connection to the stabbing death of his mother.

David Franklin VanGennip, 50, was arrested on a Stoddard County warrant for murder in the second degree and armed criminal action.

At about 10:44 a.m. Friday, the Advance Police Department received a call that a woman had been stabbed. After responding to the scene at 806 W. Masters St., Apt. 15, officers discovered that Nada G. VanGennip, 80, had died of multiple stab wounds.

The Stoddard County Sheriff's Department was contacted, and the Stoddard County Major Case Squad was immediately activated and started an investigation. It was discovered the victim's automobile was missing and a statewide broadcast was sent out.

The vehicle was located on Interstate 55 in St. Genevieve County, driven by David VanGennip, who was placed into custody by the St. Genevieve County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. VanGennip was later transported to the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department where warrants were issued.

As of press time, VanGennip was being held at the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department under a $1 million cash only bond.
