Stoddard County mother and son are sentenced

Thursday, March 30, 2006

CAPE GIRARDEAU - United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway announced Wednesday that two Stoddard County residents were sentenced to prison on a felony drug charge.

Michael Thrower, 25, and Darlene Noveda Smith, 46, both of Dexter, were sentenced to 140 and 100 months in prison, respectively, on one felony count of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Upon release from prison, Thrower and Smith will each be placed on supervised release for five years.

Thrower appeared Tuesday and Smith appearedWednesday before U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel.

Previously with their plea of guilty, both admitted that on Aug. 6, 2005, Thrower agreed to provide methamphetamine in exchange for pseudoephedrine pills to a SEMO Drug Task Force Officer acting in an undercover capacity.

Thrower indicated that his mother, Darlene Smith, would pick up the pills from the undercover officer and then he (Thrower) would manufacture the methamphetamine in the morning. Smith would then deliver the undercover officer's share of the finished methamphetamine.

Smith was arrested after meeting with officers in order to obtain the pills, and Thrower was arrested shortly thereafter when he met with undercover officers to obtain anhydrous ammonia.
