Lady Bluejays' netters turn back Dexter

CHARLESTON -- With four victories in singles competition and two more wins in doubles, the Charleston High School girls tennis team defeated Dexter 6-3 Tuesday.

Lindsay Burke (No. 3), Mary Kate Renaud (No. 4), Kayla McKenzie (No. 5) and Chelsea Stallings (No. 6) won their matches for the Lady Bluejays. Burke was an 8-3 victor over Emily Vines, Renaud topped Catherine Kinchen 8-3, McKenzie knocked off Kristyn Lemons 8-2 and Stalling upset Kendra Rinehard 8-3.

Dexter's Amanda Dooley (No. 1) and Kaitlyn Heil (No. 2) posted victories for the Lady Bearcats (0-1 overall). Dooley bested Jade Schwieger 8-5 and Heil held off Jordan Duenne 8-6.

The Lady Bluejays sealed the dual-meet win after two of their three doubles teams recorded victories. Renaud and Allison DeField (No. 2) stopped Vines and Rinehart 8-1 while Duenne and Stallings (No. 3) were 8-5 victors against Kinchen and Lemons. Dooley and Heil (No. 1) teamed for Dexter to beat Schwieger and Burke 8-4.

At the junior varsity level, Liz Matthews, Madeline Burke and Hannah Showmaker earned victories in singles competition. Maggie Fox and Morgan Collier teamed to secure a JV doubles win.

On Thursday, Charleston travels to play at Massac County, Ill.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 7,

Goreville, Ill. 2

KELLY -- Despite getting three hits, the Kelly Lady Hawks improved to 4-0 overall after besting Goreville, Ill., on Tuesday.

Kelly scored four times in the second to take a 4-0 lead before yielding two tallies to Goreville in the fifth. The Lady Hawks sealed the victory after scoring three times in the sixth.

Londyn Backfisch had a triple and two RBIs for Kelly, which received a double from Casey Kern and an RBI-single from Haley Glastetter.

Jessica Riley pitched 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. She allowed two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk. Heather Beggs hurled the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

"It seems like we did a good job of putting the ball in play and getting runners over with our bunts," Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge said.

The Lady Hawks play at Cape Girardeau Central on Thursday.

Oran 15,

ORAN -- In just three innings Tuesday, the Oran Lady Eagles pounded out 15 runs on eight hits to beat Clearwater.

Halle Woodfin led Oran's attack by going 2-for-2 with four RBIs, while Jodi Urhahn added two hits and one RBI. Amanda Williams, Ellen Sikes, Kristie Mangels and Claire Seyer contributed one hit apiece for Oran (3-0 overall).

Seyer pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout.

BASEBALL

Clarkton 12,

Risco 2 (five innings)

CLARKTON -- The Risco Tigers dropped a 10-run decision at Clarkton in five innings Tuesday.

Ross Carter put the Tigers ahead in the first inning after hitting a two-run home run. Matt Smith and Jeff Walker each chipped in a double for Risco.

Keith Kimball suffered the pitching defeat. He surrendered 12 runs (seven earned runs) on nine hits over five innings. Kimball walked five and struck out eight.

On Monday, Risco was defeated by Campbell 19-9 in a game that featured plenty of offense.

Justin Earnheart, who hit a two-run homer in the Risco second, was the losing pitcher. The Tigers received 10 walks and were hit four times by the Campbell pitching staff.

Cale Weeks and Dylan Lynn added home runs for Campbell.
