SIKESTON -- What started out as a fight Sunday afternoon escalated, leading officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety to arrest eight people.

Laumphiama Simpson, 17, and his mother, Kim Simpson, 36, are both charged and three juveniles were sent to the detention facility in Charleston.

Laumphiama Simpson is charged with first degree burglary, first degree assault, armed criminal action and felony stealing. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.

Kim Simpson is charged with first degree burglary and third degree assault and is being held on $10,000 bond.

Three other adults were released pending review by the Scott County prosecutor.

According to DPS Director Drew Juden, two males got into a fight in front 414 Ruth St. just before 5 p.m. Sunday. After the fight, one of the subjects apparently told his family and they were unhappy with the outcome. The family then went back to the residence to seek revenge on the others involved.

Several subjects entered the residence at 414 Ruth St. and started assaulting those inside. While details are still unclear it appears that a rifle belonging to the occupants was fired during the fight inside the house. The rifle was apparently stolen by someone who had entered the house during the altercation.

The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected in the case.
