SJHS girls tracksters have record-setting year

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh and eighth grade girls track and field team had a banner year this season in which numerous junior high records were broken.

Seventh grader Betsy Borgsmiller broke two school records with a high jump leap of 5'2". She was undefeated in the event this year.

Borgsmiller also set a meet record at the Jackson Relays in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.95, which was a school record until she broke it days later in the SEMO Conference meet with a time of 1:04.50.

Borgsmiller was also a member of the school record-setting 4 x 400 meter relay team of eighth graders Mary Eifert, Runiqua Bryant and Te'Kora Williams with a time of 4:44.59.

Seventh grader Keyonna Blissett set a school record in the 75 meter hurdles with a time of 12.81.

Eifert broke two school marks in the discus (65' 3 1/4") and shot put (26' 4 1/2").

Eighth grader Vonteria Applewhite broke the school long jump record with a leap of 15'9".


ESSEX -- Zach Cain struck out 15 batters in seven innings as the Richland Rebels defeated Delta 5-2 on Monday.

Cain, a senior, has struck out 52 batters in 32 innings this season while carrying a .440 batting average.

EAST PRAIRIE -- The East Prairie Eagles defeated Portageville 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday behind the complete game shutout by Zach Secoy.

Secoy allowed just two hits and struck out five.

Cody Cook was the losing pitcher for Portageville.

East Prairie collected 14 hits in the contest.
