60 years ago

SIKESTON - A four-room frame dwelling occupied by the Joe Hill family was gutted by fire Thursday evening.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - Firemen, known to 1,000 needy children as Santa's helpers, will complete the final phase of their annual Tree of Lights project today. Delivery of packages containing toys, fruit and candy will be made this afternoon and tonight.


SIKESTON - Sikeston's first snow of the winter - a Christmas present for the children - measured three inches. Streets and highways in the area were slick as the white cover formed ice. Low temperatures caused ice to cling to the roads.

SIKESTON - Warehouse manager of the Bootheel Food Bank Ray Johnson loaded his storeroom with crates of food. The food bank served more than 110 agencies and thousands more persons than anticipated.


SIKESTON - Members of the Sikeston Jaycees helped man the disc jockey booth at KSIM Radio on Monday as one of their money-making projects for the year. Terry Jackson, station owner "turned the station over" to the club members and let them provide their own sponsors for air time. Money raised through the activity will provide monetary support for needy agencies in the Sikeston community.

SIKESTON - The Rev. Lawrence Ray, who turned a lifelong love of trains into a hobby this summer, is creating a wonderland in his living room. But unlike a dream, Ray plans to keep building and changing his miniature creation, spanning the seasons of time.


SIKESTON - Students at Southeast Elementary School in Sikeston conducted a book float parade at the school featuring the students' favorite books. Float winners were: Kala Axtell, Brian Brock, Brian Fisk, Brian King and Ryne Mitchell.
