Sikeston gets top seed in conference tournament
SIKESTON -- Sikeston and Charleston picked up the top two seeds Wednesday night for the upcoming SEMO Conference tournament.
The two state runners-up lead the field of the new tournament which tips off Dec. 4 at Sikeston.
Notre Dame, Jackson and defending conference champ Poplar Bluff were the third, fourth and fifth seeds while Cape Central is the sixth seed as voted on by the conference's coaches.
New Madrid County Central, Caruthersville, Dexter and Kennett will play a game on the opening night to determine which teams will pick up the seventh and eight seeds.
The "play-in" games will feature Dexter and Caruthersville at 5:30 p.m. followed by New Madrid and Kennett at 7 Monday, Dec. 4.
Sikeston, which finished second in Class 4 at 23-7, will play the winner of the Dexter-Caruthersville game at 5:30 Tuesday while Charleston, 24-8 and runner-up in Class 3 a year ago, plays the New Madrid-Kennett winner at 7. The losing teams will meet at 5:30 Wednesday, Dec. 8 to ensure each team in the tournament plays at least twice.
Poplar Bluff and Jackson will start the first round at 8:30 Monday while Cape Central and Notre Dame play at 8:30 Tuesday.
Consolation semifinals will be at 7 and 8:30 Wednesday while the semifinals will be played Thursday.
The championship game is scheduled for 8:30 Friday, Dec. 10 with the third place game at 7 and the consolation championship set for 5:30.
