Woman killed in accident

NEW MADRID -- A New Madrid woman sustained fatal injuries after a tractor on a tow truck fell onto her vehicle late Thursday.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 11:09 p.m. on Interstate 55, two miles north of New Madrid, northbound motorist Charles W. White, 49, of Hayti was towing a road tractor when he crossed the median and traveled into the path of the southbound vehicle driven by Elizabeth K. Johnson, 71, of New Madrid. Johnson's vehicle struck the side of White's vehicle, and both vehicles traveled off the right side of the road. The tractor in tow overturned on top of Johnson's vehicle.

Johnson was pronounced dead at 1:34 a.m. today at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Her passenger, Lataja J. Gary, 18, of New Madrid sustained serious injuries and was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center. White's passenger, Sarfraz A. Choudry, 24, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, received minor injuries and was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
