Kennett and Poplar Bluff notch wins

KENNETT -- For the first time in school history, the Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team was defeated by the Kennett Indians in a 2-1 overtime game on Wednesday night.

Sikeston (1-5) struck first at the 37 minute mark when Evan Underwood kicked one in on an assist from Hector Lemus. That score would stand at halftime with Sikeston leading 1-0.

Kennett tied it up just ten minutes into the second half off of a Blake Wilbanks goal with an assist from Andrew Hooper.

Both teams went scoreless from then on and overtime would be needed to declare a winner.

Seven minutes later, Hooper scored the unassisted goal to give Kennett their first win over Sikeston.

"We had a down night," Sikeston head coach Derrick Long said. "Not to take anything away from Kennett but, every time we go over there it's a tough game. They have a kind of a small field and it's real compacted and when you play on a field like that anyone could beat anyone."

"They have never beat us in the past so this is their first victory against us," Long added. "If you play a team enough they're going to eventually get one. But, other than that you tip your hat to them (Kennett). They wanted it a little more tonight."

Sikeston's next game will be tonight against the state champion Notre Dame Bulldogs.
