You play, you pay

This is to the city of Sikeston. I am calling to ask them about the new skatepark. The concrete has been poured for months and months now. The kids worked real hard to raise money to build it. I don't know who has that money, but the kids need a place to skate and I think they need to know the truth. Is there going to be a skatepark or not? Baseball players, soccer players and tennis players were never asked to help build their place to play. Please answer this question.

Did you not see the story that ran on the front page Sept. 19? Bids to equip the skatepark were not satisfactory and were rejected by the City Council at the request of the Sikeston Skatepark Committee. Plans are to rebid for equipment when Skatepark Committee hope to have more money to offer for equipment.

Stormy weather

The Commissioners stated that "This is the generator that we need to power the repeater towers when we have a power outage like we had over the weekend," said Burger. "And also for when the highway department workers need to get out in the middle of the night to trim trees lying across county roads so we have some illumination." I guess they haven't stopped to realize that you can't use the generator in two places at one time. The repeater tower is a stationary object and the trees that fell down were all over the county. If the Commissioners will just get the insurance claim finalized on the last time they were struck with lightning then they won't have to worry about this. I sure hope we don't have another storm soon.

Turmoil over our oil

Mike is it true that the oil which will be drilled does not belong to us but will go on the world market? What about us? Please write an editorial about this situation.

All clear for nuclear

I read about the hunt for uranium in Mississippi County. Frankly, I think Mississippi County would be a good place for the location of a nuclear power plant.

Boyd's on the board

Yea to Taco Johns for having something about Neal Boyd on their billboard. This is Sikeston - where are all the signs supporting this wonderful Sikeston talent and native of Sikeston? There may be others - but this one was noticed. Hopefully others will show their support in the next couple of days.

Moral judgment

I'm the SpeakOut caller who commented on Sarah Palin, the NRA and the shotgun wedding. To the person who attacked me for it, I say this: I made no moral judgment, no accusations, no name-calling. You did. You called the teenage, out-of-wedlock pregnancy a "mistake." I didn't. You accused me of having "lots of shotgun weddings" in my family. Why so harsh? You're a mean old bat, disguising yourself as a caring person. Are you a preacher or something? You're the judgmental one, not me. And it sounds like you've had years of practice.

Time for a counselor

I read your "Man holds woman hostage" headline. That's a first. I've been around a long time and as far as I know, for married men, it has always been the other way around.

Cast not the first vote

Before you cast your vote on Nov. 4, read you Bible according to the 13th chapter of the book of Revelations, the anti-Christ will be a man in his 40's, of Muslim descent, who will deceive the nations with his persuasive language and have a massive Christ-like appeal. The prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything. Chapter 13 tells us that the beast will have authority for 42 months and you know what that is - almost a four-year term of president. I was watching a news program a few nights ago. I watched in horror as Barack Obama made the statement with pride, "We are no longer a Christian nation; we are now a nation of Christians, Jew, Muslims and Buddhists." As with so many other statements I've heard him (and his wife) make, I never thought I would see the day that I'd hear something like that from a presidential candidate in this nation. There's also a video on You Tube of Obama making a speech in 2006 where he clearly makes fun of the Bible. I am a Christian and a Democrat. I have voted a Democrat ticket for 45 years, but not this year. Wake up, America.

Losers never win

Wake up. Maybe you should do your homework. The first 5 1/2 to 6 years of President Bush's Administration the economy was fine in spite of 9/11 and Katrina and so forth. It started going downhill when the Democrats gained the Senate and Congress, like it or not. They talk big and have done nothing. It's not President Bush's fault. Also, if you think the presidency wasn't won fairly, how many times do the votes have to be counted to get it through your heads? Grow up, you lost and I hope you lose again.

Parade and cameras

Since when did our Public Safety commander become like McArthur or God for our city. I am 58 years old and have been going to the Cotton Carnival since day one, when it was downtown, before most of the people in Sikeston even remember. The young people need to be proud of something and this is about the last thing we have, so many things have been taken away. I like going down the road knowing that the cameras are upon the hard working citizens, but then again, they don't make any arrests on other ends of our community and they're scared to go there after dark.

In a nutshell

I'm looking for pecans. If anybody has them for sale, please put your number in SpeakOut.
