Gertrude R. Jones
EAST PRAIRIE -- Lifetime East Prairie resident, Gertrude Carlotta Roberts Jones, 82 years and 28 days, passed from this life on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Cape Girardeau with her daughters at her side. She had been a short-time resident of the East Prairie Nursing Center.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Shelby Funeral Chapel in East Prairie from 5-8 p.m. with a memorial service to celebrate and honor her life scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in East Prairie on Monday, Oct. 6. Burial services will be held following the service at East Prairie Memorial Park.
She was born at home in East Prairie on Sept. 5, 1926, the daughter of Annie St. Clair Mitchell Roberts and Harry Silvey Roberts. Her maternal great-grandparents helped found the new community of Hibbard, later named East Prairie, after moving from the prairie community of Millar in the late 1880s.
She remained a lifetime and prominent resident where she was a homemaker and landowner and was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in East Prairie. She was a soft-spoken remarkable lady known for her great love of family, church and friends. Her gracious and generous Christian spirit touched the lives of many, and she left in indelible mark on the lives of her family and friends.
On Dec. 22, 1945, she married Sam G. Jones in East Prairie. He preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1984.
Survivors include: her daughters, Silvey Ann Barker and son-in-law, Sam Barker; Sammie Lea Ponder and son-in-law John Ponder; and Carlotta Mary Clair (Dotty) Aters and son-in-law Jim Aters, all of East Prairie. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Rob Barker and wife, Sandy; Brian Dill and wife, Tonya; Lydia Sneathern Castleman and Mitchell Aters of East Prairie; Andrew Sneathern and wife, Larissa, and Kena Lea Sneathern Brandt of Charlottesville, Va.; Carlotta-Ann (Annie) Barker-McMurray and husband, Jeremy of Jacksonville, Fla. "Gram" was blessed to live and enjoy the lives of 11 great-grandchildren, Zachary and Savanna Barker, Jackson Sneathern, Hannah, Adam and Mason Dill, Samuel and Clay McMurray, Jones, Lance and Ellyana Castleman.
