Risco wins home opener over Oran

RISCO -- The Risco Tigers won their first home game of the season on Tuesday night with a defeat over the Oran Eagles 54-48.

"We played pretty solid [Tuesday]," Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship said. "We pressed well. Our 1-2-2 trap really worked out for us."

The Tigers found themselves down by a score of 41-39 at the end of the third quarter but was able to lean on the play of their senior Dillon Hill in the fourth quarter who scored 6 points. Risco went on to outscore the Eagles 15-7 in the final period.

"(Dillon) Hill, our senior, stepped up," Blankenship said. "(Brandon) Bennett helped us out a lot too. He didn't score a lot but, he rebounded the ball well."

Risco (3-1) will play host to the Delta C-7 Chargers on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Junior Varsity

In junior varsity action, the Oran Eagles defeated the Risco Tigers in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, 54-53.

With around 20 seconds remaining in the contest and Oran down 53-48, Austin Todt and Ryan Trankler each drained 3-pointers to take a one point lead and the win.

Tyler Heuring led Oran with 17 points while Luke Bixler and Chris Pavy scored 21 and 16 points respectively for the Tigers.

Seventh Grade

Sikeston 48,

Charleston 39

CHARLESTON -- The Sikeston seventh grade basketball team improved to 4-0 Tuesday with a 48-39 win over the Charleston Bluejays.

"We came out with good intensity," said Sikeston coach Derek James. "We were able to force lots of turnovers with our press and trap."

Sikeston used their pressure defense to jump out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter.

"We had one of our better games converting our layups," James said. "It was our toughest game of the year so far and the kids stepped up to the challenge and responded with a lot of intensity."

J.T. Jones led Sikeston in scoring with 13 points while Peyton Boyd chipped in 10.

Charleston was led by Robert Bogan's 21 points. Mike Kellum added 11.

Eighth Grade

Charleston 36,

Sikeston 23

CHARLESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs eighth grade team lost their first game of the season to the Charleston Bluejays 36-23 Tuesday night.

Sikeston fell behind 12-7 and struggled scoring the entire night.

"(Charleston) is just extremely athletic and we had a hard time matching up with them," said Sikeston coach Kevin Self. "We just had a hard time scoring."

Sikeston (5-1) was led by Markeith Bratcher's 7 points. Charleston got 12 points from Corey Frazier and nine points from Ryan Parham.

The Sikeston seventh and eighth grade teams will be back in action Thursday when they host NMCC. The two teams will play Charleston again next Tuesday when the Bulldogs host the Bluejays.
