City revamps ordinance for cemeteries

NEW MADRID - The city of New Madrid is taking steps to provide increased oversight of its cemeteries. However, this comes at a time when it is running out of room to continue in the burial business.

In July, the New Madrid City Council approved a new ordinance putting the Board of Aldermen in charge of the community's cemeteries. The ordinance gave the board the power to purchase real estate to create cemeteries, put them in charge of cemetery maintenance and improvements and empowered them to set costs and fines connected with cemeteries.
