Flu fight

Friday, October 16, 2009

The first line of defense against the H1N1 flu got some help as they prepare to battle the bug. The vaccine was administered to Missouri Delta Medical Center staff, including Mary Riley (above), lab technician, on Thursday afternoon. Those working in the emergency room, Express Care, ICU, surgery and maternal child staff were among the first to receive the shots. "We are trying to protect those with direct exposure," said Joy Cauthorn, safety/infection control nurse with MDMC. She said the hospital has already had 17 admissions, all in the high-risk groups such as those with chronic conditions including asthma or diabetes. Also Missouri health officials have set up a hot line to answer questions about swine flu. The hot line will be staffed 24-hours a day, and specialists will be able to answer questions about the new vaccine, flu symptoms and when to seek medical care. The phone number is 1-877-FLU-4141.
