Cooter falls in Class 1 semifinals

Brashear limits potent Wildcats offense to four hits

SPRINGFIELD -- The Cooter Wildcats saw their dreams of a state title come to an end Wednesday morning with a 3-2 loss to Brashear in the Class 1 Semifinals.

Brashear got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third when Nicholas Gordon reached first on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on an error. Adam Songer then singled, scoring Gordon. Songer later scored on a single to center from Matthew Thomas.

Trailing 2-0, Cooter immediately responded in the top of the fourth to tie the game. With one out, Zach Watkins reached on an error and stole second. Watkins then scored on a single through the left side by Jonathan Boone. Logan Edwards then doubled, scoring Boone and tying the game, however the Wildcats couldn't plate any more runs the rest of the inning.

With the game tied, Brashear took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Hayden Houseman walked and advanced to second on a Gordon single and later scored on a fielder's choice by Songer.

Cooter had a chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth and seventh innings but in the sixth inning the Wildcats stranded runners on second and third and stranded a runner on third in the seventh.

Jordan Anderson took the loss on the mound for Cooter, pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Logan Edwards. Anderson gave up one run on two hits while walking four and striking out two. Anderson gave up two unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking one. Zach Watkins pitched a scoreless final two innings for Cooter, striking out three while not allowing a walk or a hit.

Matthew Thomas went the distance for Brashear, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out nine.

Cooter (22-7) played for third place this morning at 10 a.m. against St. Elizabeth while Brashear will take on Concordia in the Class 1 State Championship game today.
