Gin fire

Vanduser Fire and Rescue along with Sikeston Department of Public Safety Fire Division and several local fire departments responded to a structure fire at Vanduser Gin Co., 801 Hamilton, St., Tuesday afternoon. According to Vanduser Fire Chief Bobby Wallace, the fire started around 2 p.m. at the north end of the building. Apparently, there was a companywide power outage. Shortly after, employees working in another building noticed smoke at the base of a telephone pole located near the building that caught on fire. No one was inside the building when the fire started. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but the source seems to be related to a faulty telephone pole, Wallace said. Scott County Rural Fire, Morehouse Fire and Oran Fire districts also responded to the scene. "We're grateful for the quick response of everyone. It could've been a lot worse than it was," Wallace said.
