Caruthersville runs past Portageville 36-0
PORTAGEVILLE -- Ronnie Jones first game at the head of the Portageville Bulldogs football program didn't go as well as he hoped.
Taking on the visiting Caruthersville Tigers, the Bulldogs struggled to hold down the Tigers' ground game, falling 36-0 to open the season.
"We probably got out-talented in some areas tonight," Jones said. "As a general rule Caruthersville has a real good program.
"They have a bunch of kids back and I'm not making excuses, they were a better football team than us."
After the two teams exchanged possession a couple times, it was the Tigers Elbie Fonda who put his his team on the board first, breaking free for a 46 yard to take the 6-0 lead. David Shaw would run in the subsequent two-point conversion to bring their lead up to eight.
Caruthersville added another eight in the quarter when quarterback Perry Middle would connect for a 10-yard strike to Vohland Fonda followed by another successful two-point conversion.
Portageville would only make things worse on themselves in the second quarter when quarterback Caden Robbins' pitch to the running back would fall to the ground, being picked up by the Tiger's Graham Gardner who would take it 33 yards for the score.
Coming in to the second half already trailing 22-0, Portageville would see the game slowly fade out of reach with Fonda reaching pay dirt on a 19-yard run followed by a Peter Lloyd 73-yard touchdown on a punt return, both in the third quarter, to round out the scoring.
With 14-points coming from the Tigers defense and special teams, Friday's game reminded Jones a lot of the two teams game last year, which Caruthersville won 43-28.
"The thing is they burned us last year with a kick off return and a fumble return for a touchdown and they did the exact same thing tonight," he said. "That Lloyd kid, he's not an all-state returner for nothing. He showed that he's capable of going anytime he touches the ball and he did it tonight."
Though they did have one passing touchdown, it was definitely the Tigers ground game that got them through the night. Of their 221 total yards, 195 came via the run.
Leading the rushing attack was Elbie Fonda, racking up 134 yards on eight rushes, including a touchdown.
Portageville likewise was run heavy, just unable to put up the numbers the Tigers could. Of their 101 total yards on the night 84 came on ground and 17 through the air.
The brunt of the Bulldogs carries were split between two backs with Fred Treadwell rushing for 49 yards on 13 carries and Dominique Walker rushing for 39 yards on five carries.
Potentially bringing more trouble to an already shaky offense, the Bulldogs got a scare when when one of their offensive lineman went down with an injury.
"We just don't have any depth there.," Jones said. "Potentially we lost another one tonight. Shae Rudd may end up with a torn meniscus. It's a little bit early (to tell), but he's going to go to the doctor tonight and get it checked out."
If there is one high note to take in to their next contest, Jones said he pleased with the effort of the team's defense.
"I felt if there was any aspect of the game tonight that we did pretty well in it was on defense," he said. "We tried to play as many kids as we possibly can one-way. The kids understand that and they stepped up. I was real proud of two or three of the kids in secondary."
Next up, Portageville will travel to Chaffee to face the Red Devils Friday at 7 p.m. Chaffee will also come in to the game 0-1 after opening the season with a 14-0 loss to Grandview.
