Deering man faces charges

Sunday, February 6, 2011

CARUTHERSVILLE -- A Deering man has been charged with first-degree burglary and tampering with a vehicle.

Joe Mooney, 38, now has a bond set at $20,000, according to the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department.

The charges stem from a Thursday incident, in which deputies were called to a Deering residence after it was initially reported the suspect possibly killed his family. That day, Mooney reportedly went to a neighbor's residence, forced his way in and began assaulting the resident, saying he had killed his family.

"At some point Mooney had been in the driveway of his neighbor and broke out the passenger side window of his neighbor's 2006 Dodge pickup truck," said Lt. Ryan Holder.

Once officers arrived on the scene, Mooney was quickly taken into custody and a search of Mooney's residence revealed no indications or signs that a homicide had occurred.

Deputies also spoke with neighbors and family members, learning that there was a minor domestic dispute at the Mooney home earlier in the day Thursday.

Mooney is set to appear before Judge Byron Luber at 10 a.m. Monday.
