Retailers prepare for Black Friday shoppers

SIKESTON -- Retailers in Sikeston assure there will be plenty of specials for Black Friday shoppers -- and in some cases, Thursday shoppers, this year.

Wednesday's Standard Democrat contains pre-Thanksgiving and Black Friday advertisements by many local retailers offering specials on clothing, toys and big-ticket items.

"We are having a big pre-Thanksgiving sale with everything in the store -- excluding a few items -- at buy one at regular price and get the second for $1," said Sheila Bollinger, manager of Goody's in Sikeston.

The store will open its doors at 6 a.m. on Black Friday with over 100 early bird specials.

JC Penney is bolstering its sales event this year with over 500 doorbuster specials from the store opening at 4 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday.

Lowes will open at 5 a.m. -- two hours earlier than its normal hours -- on Black Friday. Radio Shack in Sikeston will open its doors at 5:30 a.m. compared its usual 9 a.m. opening.

The VF Outlet at Sikeston Factory Stores will also open at 8 a.m. Black Friday -- an hour earlier than usual.

"We are having -- until 1 p.m. and while they last -- coupons that could be 15, 25, 40, 50 or even 100 percent off purchases," said assistant manager April Bell.

Bell said she and her fellow employees call the Wednesday before Thanksgiving "Black Wednesday" because it's the day they spend preparing the infants, children and adults clothing store for Black Friday.

"We make sure the signs are up and ready and there are enough gift cards out. We make sure everything is restocked and ready to go," Bell said.

Bell said employees usually start preparing for Black Friday Tuesday afternoon and go through a final checklist before the big-sale day.

Preparing for Black Friday sales does include hard work, Bollinger said.

"A lot of the mega door busters we have to hold off the floor until Black Friday morning so we are sure to have enough for everyone," the Goody's manager said.

Many retailers will open their doors Thanksgiving day, too.

Ashley McCree, assistant manager at Family Dollar in Sikeston, said the store will run specials Thanksgiving day and on Black Friday.

"Look in your newspapers to find coupons," McCree said.

Walgreens in Sikeston will also be open Thanksgiving day with one-day specials offered from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store will open at its regular time of 8 a.m. Friday with sales lasting through the weekend.

For the first time, Walmart will open at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving Day with specials on toy, home and apparel items. Then beginning at midnight Black Friday, specials will be offered on electronics. From 8 a.m. through the weekend, the store will offer promotions on more items.
