SIKESTON -- Concealed carry permits locally are up compared to last year reflecting somewhat a national trend.

In 2011, a record 16.4 million background checks were performed through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, up from 14.4 million in 2010, according to an Associated Press report.

With 30 years in the business, Alan Reiman, owner of Re-Armms in Sikeston, said he has seen plenty of ups and downs and this increase was not unexpected: "It's because we're nearing election time."

Numbers were up some in 2011 but local sheriffs are not reporting huge increases in either renewals or new applications for carry concealed endorsements.
