PERRYVILLE -- The Sikeston girls basketball team improved to 10-4 on the season with a 67-49 win over district foe Perryville.

Sikeston's pressure defense took its toll early, forcing several Perryville turnovers that helped the Lady Bulldogs race out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter.

"We came out and played well," said Sikeston coach Matt Schonhoff. "Our pressure led to a lot of steals and easy layups early on but we got into foul trouble late in the first and into the second."

Perryville fought back and cut into the Sikeston lead to make the score 31-26 at halftime, helped by a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Tyangela Gibson.

With Sikeston clinging to a 46-40 lead after three quarters, the Lady Bulldogs took control in the fourth quarter. After a 3-pointer from Quesha Howard, Sikeston grabbed the momentum and wore down the Lady Pirates in the final frame with their pressure and speed.

Gibson led Sikeston with 18 points and six rebounds while Keyonna Blissett finished with 15 and seven assists and Howard 12 points.

Schonhoff said he was proud of his bench as well as they played key minutes in the contest.

"Bench did really good job of maintaining the lead while they were in there," Schonhoff said. "Danika Garmon played really well with Taneisha (Pulley) in foul trouble.

"When Taneisha came back in the fourth quarter I thought she scored well around the basket."

Pulley led Sikeston with six steals in the game.

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday when they host the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules.

Perryville won the junior varsity game 41-30.
