SIKESTON -- The Sikeston boys and girls track and field team split with Cape Central in a dual meet on Wednesday afternoon at SPS Stadium.

The Sikeston boys defeated Cape Central 93-52 while the girls fell to the Lady Tigers, 71-67.

The boys were highlighted by a sweep in all four relay events. Sophomore Stephen Baker ran on two of the relays while also capturing first place in the open 100 meter dash (11.05) and the open 400 (53.16).

"There's some real good things," Sikeston coach Terry Flannigan said. "We had a few performances by certain kids that did really well. But then we had a few fundamental basic, mental mistakes that we've got to work on. We stress to the kids the little things. One of those little things was on a relay where we messed up on a handoff, they had it in the wrong hand, and everybody was messed up. Those type of scenarios we've got to correct real quick to be able to be competitive when it comes time for these big relays."

On the girls side, Jalen Peet captured first place in the triple jump (34-4) and the 200 meter dash (28.09) as Sikeston's only double winner in the individual events. The Lady Bulldogs also won the two speed relays on the day.

"Right now we're ahead in a couple areas," Flannigan said of his team's performances. "I was talking with coach (Chris) Sarakas, our jumps are ahead of everything where we were last year. I was telling the kids that we don't want to peak right now, we want to peak that first part of May going into districts. As long as we keep taking those baby steps and keep climbing that ladder we'll be okay."
