DESOTO -- With district play right around the corner, the Sikeston Bulldogs were hoping to close out its regular season schedule against DeSoto with a good performance.

"Good" may not be the most appropriate adjective as the Bulldogs put together one of its most impressive games of the season with a dominating 84-32 victory to ruin DeSoto's Senior Night.

The Bulldogs (22-2) received the top seed in the Class 4, District 1 Tournament that started with first round games on Saturday at the Bearcat Event Center in Dexter. Sikeston is scheduled to play the winner of the Kennett-Dexter game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

After a grueling week of practice last week, Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield was hoping the hard work would pay dividends.

"I thought we really came in with great intensity," Holifield said. "We played well as a team and shared the basketball. I was very pleased with our leadership on the floor and I thought at times we played as well as we have all season."

Sikeston jumped out to a 24-5 first quarter lead and a 51-19 halftime lead.

There wasn't much the Bulldogs did wrong.

"We really had a point of emphasis in certain areas in practice and I thought our players have had a great attitude and really worked hard in practice and they carried it over into the game tonight," Holifield said.

DeSoto (15-11) cut Sikeston's lead to 9-5 early in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs closed the period on a 15-0 run.

Sikeston continued the onslaught in the second quarter, starting the period with four consecutive baskets to cap a 23-0 run that spanned both quarters.

The Bulldogs took a 51-19 lead into the half. They had 17 assists as a team to just two turnovers in the first half.

The third quarter was more of the same as Sikeston out-scored the Dragons 24-4 in the period to take a 78-24 lead into the final quarter. Holifield had already emptied his bench by the five minute mark of the third quarter.

Reese Porter led all scorers with 21 points. Jones followed up with 15 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Markeith Bratcher hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter on his way to 13 points on the night.

Vashawn Ruffin scoerd nine points and finished with six dazzling assists. Cord Sheehy had six points and six assists.

"We were completely unselfish," Holifield said. "It's been a point of emphasis and I thought we really did a lot of good things. But the biggest thing is I thought we were solid defensively. We stayed between our man and the basket. We did a good job in help-side and we also blocked out and rebounded. From everything we've taken and worked on in practice, I saw us carry it over into the game which is a positive going into the district tournament."

The Bulldogs were 24 of 33 (73 percent) on two-point shots and they were 9 for 19 (47 percent) on 3-point shots. The Bulldogs shot a sizzling 63 percent overall from the field.

Sikeston had 27 assists as a team to only four turnovers.

DeSoto finished with 20 turnovers.

The Dragons were led by Sean Solomon's 12 points.
