Scott County set to kick off blacktop program

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

BENTON -- Another sign of spring: fresh blacktop.

Scott County commissioners said during their regular meeting Tuesday that county road department crews will start this year's blacktop maintenance program Monday.

"It's that time of the year," Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn said.

Commissioners recalled it was around the third week of March that they kicked off the blacktop season last year as well.

The roads county workers are working on will be marked well, Ziegenhorn said, "but people need to pay attention and watch out for workers. People need to be aware."

Jamie Burger, presiding county commissioner, said they don't have a specific number of linear miles they intend to do.

"It depends on the roads that we do: how bad they are," Burger said.

Commissioners said there will still be no new blacktop roads.

"We're still resurfacing, addressing existing blacktop," Burger said.

The county has a total of 310 linear miles of roadway to maintain, according to Ziegenhorn. "One hundred and seventy miles is blacktop."

He noted, as a comparison, that the Sikeston Special Road District has about 50 miles to maintain.
