CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs soccer team lost a heartbreaker Thursday during the first day of the Noon Optimist Tournament at Cape Central High School 2-1 in overtime against St. Vincent.

Eight minutes into the overtime, St. Vincent punched in the winning goal.

"It was a tough result," Sikeston soccer coach Doyle Noe said. "It's still really early in the season and we're trying to find our identity."

Sikeston (1-1) had to go without the services of their leading scorer, Madison Chaney, because of a hip injury the senior sustained Wednesday on the road against Harrisburg, Ill.

"You take out our leading scorer and we're trying to find ways to score without her," Noe said. "Obviously, we run our offense mostly through her."

Chaney will more than likely not play for the remainder of the weekend and possibly longer.

Fellow senior Monica Carter scored Sikeston's first goal just six minutes into the contest with the assist from Tori Helms.

Sikeston's defense held St. Vincent scoreless until the 60th minute when the Lady Indians tied the game. Eventually, St. Vincent ended the game in the first overtime.

"Our defense really stepped up and kept us in the game," said Noe.

Sikeston will play again today at 5 p.m. against either Notre Dame or Marion, Ill.
