SIKESTON -- Thanks in part to a eight-run rally to start things off on Monday, Sikeston Auxiliary Unit 114 picked up a 12-1 win over district rival Scott County Junior Legion Post 369 in the first game of a doubleheader.

"The kids came out today and responded well," Sikeston head coach Jacob May said. "We hit the ball real well and Garrison Keene pitched a great game for us.

"Our defense played well and I'm just glad we were able to get everyone in the game."

After Keene sent Post 369 down in order to start the game, Unit 114 got to work with their first five batters of the contest reaching without surrendering an out. All five eventually came around to score as part of the eight run outburst that was fueled by six hits and four walks.

Unit 114 went on to add another run in the second frame before setting the mercy-rule into effect in the third inning. A bases-loaded walk to Blake Wolferding drove in the 10th run of the game. Another walk and a fielder's choice each added to what became a three-run rally which put Unit 114 ahead 12-0.

Scott County got on the board in the top of the fifth as Lane Henson doubled in their only run of the game, but soon after Keene recorded the final two outs to seal the win.

"That's kind of been our M.O. this year," May said of their 15-hit offensive performance. "The games we play real well in we score a lot of runs early and let our defense do the rest. These doubleheaders against Scott County are big district games.

"Next week when we play Jackson it will be for the first and second seed in the district tournament."

Picking up the win, Keene went all five innings allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four. He worked out of several jams, including one in the fourth after putting runners on second and third with one out, but escaped unscathed.

"He's the type of kid that gets himself into jams, but I have enough confidence in him to work his way out," May said. "He throws enough strikes and gets ground balls, fly balls and is able to work out of a lot of tough situations for us."

At the plate, Sikeston was led by Audie Hay, who went 3 for 3 while scoring a pair of runs. Drew Pikey and Sam Cox had two hits each with both collecting a double and scoring two runs.

Gage Silman contributed two hits, both singles, and drew a walk.

For Post 369, Lane Henson had the team's only extra base hit, a double, while Thomas Trankler, Nate Bolin, Dustin Gebhardt and Dylan Menz all added a single to the cause.

With the win, Sikeston now stands at 17-5 on the season and 7-2 in the district.
