Back to school bus safety

SIKESTON -- With the new school year getting under way in local districts, students and motorists are reminded to follow bus safety rules.

"Bus drivers have a very important job in the district -- transporting kids to and from school," said John Garner, director of transportation for New Madrid County R-1 School District, which begins the new school year today.

For students in kindergarten through fifth grade, bus drivers concentrate on reminding them to stay away from the bus.

"We tell our kids don't get near the bus until it comes to a complete stop," Garner said. "We have a rule on our buses: if we do have to pick up a kid on the opposite side of the road, don't come across the road until the driver gives you the signal."
