Winter weather cause of many local accidents

SIKESTON -- Snowy and icy conditions wreaked havoc for several motorists this weekend in Southeast Missouri.

An Illinois woman was seriously injured after a tractor and trailer struck her vehicle late Friday in Mississippi County.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 8:06 p.m. Friday on Interstate 57, at the 4.8 mile-marker, the accident occurred as a northbound tractor and trailer driven by Farah M. Abdulgani, 24, of Stone Mountain, Ga., struck the rear of the northbound vehicle driven by Sabrina D. Sawyer, 42, of Mounds, Ill. Sawyer's vehicle slid off the left side of the road, and Abdulgani's vehicle slid off the right side of the road.

Sawyer received serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Three adults and two children were injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday morning in Mississippi County.

The Patrol reports at 8:15 a.m. on southbound Interstate 57, four miles south of Charleston, southbound motorist Augustin Angel, 39, of Effingham, Ill., struck some ice on the roadway, causing his vehicle to slide off the right side of the road and overturn.

Angel and his passengers, Scarlett Angel, 3; Valentino Angel, 3; Maria Arelland, 32; and Veronica Arelland, 25, of Effingham received minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center.

Also on Saturday, two tractor and trailer units struck each other on southbound Interstate 55, five miles south of Portageville, in Pemiscot County.

According to the Patrol, the accident occurred at 8:59 a.m. as the tractor and trailer operated by Kwaku Offin, 25, of Dallas struck the southbound tractor and trailer driven by Dale I. Forse, 62, of San Clemente, Calif. Offin's vehicle ran off the road and struck a cable barrier.

Offin and his passenger, Norderick S. Daniels, 56, of Wiley, Texas sustained minor injuries, and they were taken by ambulance to Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital.

Four Lilbourn residents were injured in a three-vehicle accident Saturday in New Madrid County.

The Patrol reports at 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 55 at the 35.2 mile-marker, a tractor-trailer operated by Addirahman O. Farah, 34, of Sioux City, Iowa, and vehicle driven by Gary D. Ash, 54, of Lilbourn were stopped for traffic on the road. Ash observed the tractor-trailer operated by Veniamins Goncharov, 58, of Mississagua, Ontario, Canada, approaching and moved to the shoulder to avoid a collision. Goncharov also moved his vehicle to the shoulder, striking Ash's vehicle and forcing Ash's vehicle underneat a towed unit of Farah's vehicle.

Ash and his passengers, J.T. Cameron, 75; Shirley Coutant, 70; and Sherry Loyd, 34, all of Lilbourn received minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital.

Then at 2:05 p.m. on Interstate 55 at Benton, a Hayti woman was injured after the vehicle she was riding in overturned.

The accident occurred as Aljanaione L. Fisher, 28, of Hayti lost control of her vehicle on the ice-covered road, ran off the left side of the road and overturned.

Fisher's passenger, Latasha L. Covington, 34, of Hayti received minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

An Essex man and child were injured in a single-vehicle accident Sunday in Stoddard County. The Patrol reports at 9:45 a.m., motorist Jeremy L. Conner, 34, of Essex attempted to come to a stop at the intersection of Highway 153 and County Road 780 when he lost control on the ice-covered road and traveled off the right side of the road and into a field.

Conner received moderate injuries, and transported by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center. His 6-year-old passenger, Hayden A. Conner, sustained minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Sikeston hospital.
