Hodges readies for eighth, final year as state rep

Saturday, January 4, 2014

SIKESTON -- As Steve Hodges enters his eighth -- and final year -- as a state representative, he promised to do what he's always done -- the best he can.

"It's hard to believe this is the last year," said Hodges, who will enter his fourth and final term when the new Missouri Legislature session begins Wednesday. Term limits prevented Hodges from seeking re-election as state representative for the 149th District.

Representing portions of New Madrid, Pemiscot, Mississippi and Scott counties since 2006, Hodges took some time before the new session starts to discuss his plans this year as well as other top issues.

Hodges said he's being realistic as he enters his last year; he doesn't expect to have any legislation advanced or referred. However, he said: "That will not prevent me from trying to do the best I can do."

As a result, Hodges said he plans to reintroduce a bill that would add fertility treatments to medical coverage.

"I have spoken of that before," Hodges said of the issue. "I got the idea from a constituent in New Madrid who went through successful fertility treatments."

He also plans to push for the El Camino Real -- the old French/Spanish trail running from New Madrid to St. Louis -- to receive a highway designation.

"That's a real piece of history in Southeast Missouri," Hodges said.

He will also work to file a piece of legislation for awareness of ROHHAD, or Rapid-onset Obesity with Hypothalamic dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation. It's a very rare disease affecting approximately only 75 cases worldwide.

"I want to get that designation for a youngster in our town who has the rare disease," Hodges said, adding there shouldn't be any costs involved for that legislation. "It's been such a challenge to the family."

Hodges said he's also been in contact with 148th District State Rep. Holly Rehder.

"I have no problem working with a member of the opposition party if it's something I feel good about," Hodges said.
