Graduations, last days of school set

Thursday, April 24, 2014

SIKESTON -- After enduring a greater-than-usual number of snow days and then making up those days, area districts have set their graduation dates and final days of the school year.

Snow and ice forced school districts to close their doors between an abnormally high 10 and 20 days this winter. As a result, the majority of school districts are ending their years about a week later than originally scheduled.

Most high school graduations were also forced to be rescheduled due to the extended school year.

Portageville High School will be among the first to graduate its class of 2014. Forty-five seniors are expected to graduate during a 7 p.m. ceremony May 8 on the football field, weather permitting. The last day of school for the remaining students in the district will be May 16 with an early dismissal.

Seventy-nine seniors are expected to graduate during East Prairie High School's 7 p.m. commencement May 9 in the high school gym. The last day of school for the remaining students in the district is May 13.
