PREP ROUNDUP: Sikeston splits at Softballfest, Sikeston JH football blanks NMCC 43-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Madison Smith hit a walk off single in the sixth inning to beat Chaffee Thursday during the first round of the Notre Dame Softballfest at Notre Dame High School.

The Lady Bulldogs (4-3) won the game 5-4 due to the time limit rule but wound up losing to Notre Dame 7-1 in their second game of the day.

Smith and Myca Martin led Sikeston, who had 13 hits, with three hits each against Chaffee. Smith was also the winning pitcher.

Kylie Noe and Natalie Regenold had two hits apiece. Jorgia Aters added a triple and Hanna Placek hit a double.

Chaffee had 12 hits in the loss. Julia Sutterfield, Taylor Crites, Kylie Wilhite and Kaitlin McFerron all had two hits each. Mcferron added a double.

Sikeston had just one hit against Notre Dame but it was a big one. Senior Maggie Shepherd belted a solo home run in the first inning.

Notre Dame went on to score three runs in the second and scattered 15 hits. Smith pitched the loss.

Sikeston continues the Softballfest Saturday at 8 a.m. at Notre Dame when they play Perryville.

TENNIS

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston tennis team hosted the Sikeston Invitational tournament Thursday at the Sikeston Sports Complex.

Charleston, Notre Dame, Kennett and Fredericktown participated.

VOLLEYBALL

Puxico 2, Richland 0

ESSEX -- The Richland Rebels dropped their third-straight match Thursday night to conference foe Puxico 25-14, 25-8.

Richland falls to 1-3 on the season and will be in action again tonight when they travel to Advance.

JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL

Sikeston 43, NMCC 0

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston eighth grade football team took down visiting New Madrid County Central 43-0 Thursday at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.

Kevin Jones opened the game with a bit of foreshadowing by returning the first kickoff of the season 85 yards for a touchdown. Jones added another score in the second quarter, a 25 yard run to put the Bulldogs ahead 25-0 at halftime.

Elijah Faulkner added a Sikeston score in the first quarter with a 24 yard run.

Quarterback Nate Self scored two touchdowns. His first was an 11 yard pass to Shawn Blanchfield in the second quarter. He later ran one in from eight yards out for a 31-0 lead in the third quarter.

Kobe Herrion made it 37-0 with a 25 yard run in the fourth. Garrett Smith followed with a 17 yard run to make up the final.

The eighth grade's next game will be Tuesday at Cape Central. The seventh grade plays Thursday at Cape Central.
