MINER -- A national education expert who served on an initial Common Core committee shared her thoughts and experience with the national learning standards while speaking to a crowd Tuesday at the Miner Convention Center.

Dr. Sandra Stotsky, who served on the Common Core Validation Committee from 2009-2010, spoke Tuesday about her experience as a member of the validation committee, why she thinks Common Core must be stopped and how citizens can influence their local school boards.

"At the very first meeting of the validation committee, we were all asked to sign confidentiality agreements so we could never tell what happened or what was said in the committee meetings," Stotsky said.

The basic charge to this committee, Stotsky said, was members were expected to determine whether the standards were internationally benchmarked -- comparable to the best that's out there in other other high-achieving countries -- and whether they were rigorous, research-based.
